How Long Is a Police Clearance Valid?

Police clearance validity is six months. A national police clearance stays valid for six months from the date it’s issued, and it can’t be extended. After that, you apply again from your existing account. Some employers set a stricter limit, though, so the paper in your hand may be “too old” before it expires.

What you need to check your police clearance expiry
Working out your police clearance expiration date takes two minutes. Have these in front of you:
- Your printed clearance, or the file if you downloaded it
- A calendar on your phone
- The exact requirement from the office that wants it, ideally in writing
How to work out your police clearance validity
Follow these steps whenever an office asks for a clearance. They take the guesswork out of “Is mine still good?”
Step 1: Find the issue date
Look for the date your clearance was issued. Validity runs from that day, not from the day you booked or paid. So a slot you booked in March but attended in April starts the clock in April.
Step 2: Count six months forward
Add six months to the issue date. A clearance issued on 10 May, for example, stays valid until about 10 November. That’s the police clearance expiry for most uses.
Step 3: Check what the office accepts
Next, compare that date with the office’s rule. Many employers accept any clearance that hasn’t expired. However, some HR teams, schools and agencies only take one issued within the last 30, 60 or 90 days. In that case, their limit beats the six months.

Step 4: Set a reminder
Set a phone alert for one month before the expiry date. That way you can renew calmly instead of rushing during a job offer.
Step 5: Renew before you need it
When the date gets close, or when an office asks for a fresh one, start a renewal from your old account on the official portal. If your last station visit was within three years, you might not need to appear at all.
Why do employers want a newer police clearance?
A police clearance is a snapshot. It shows what the PNP’s records said on the day it was issued, and records can change within months. So an employer that’s about to trust you with cash, keys or customer data may want the most recent snapshot it can get.
That’s also why the rule differs between offices. A bank or a security agency may ask for a clearance dated within the past 30 days. Meanwhile, a small shop may accept anything still within its six months. Neither is wrong; they simply carry different risks. Ask before you apply, and get the rule in writing if you can.
What happens when a police clearance expires?
Nothing dramatic. At the expiration of police clearance validity, the paper simply stops counting for new submissions. You don’t pay a penalty, and your account doesn’t lock. Your next application just starts from the same profile, with your details already saved.
Does police clearance expire if you don’t use it?
Yes. The clock runs whether or not you submit the paper anywhere. A clearance that sat in a drawer for seven months is just as expired as one you used. So, how long is police clearance valid if you never hand it in? Still six months.
The same goes for copies. A photocopy or scan carries the same issue date, so it expires on the same day as the original.
Police clearance validity and renewal costs
Renewing costs the same as applying the first time: ₱150, plus a small charge from your payment channel. As for timing, a renewal with a station visit usually ends with the clearance that day when there’s no HIT. A renewal without appearance waits for online approval, and the portal doesn’t publish how long that takes. So start at least a week before any deadline.

Mistakes people make with the expiration date
These slips cause most rejected clearances:
- Counting from the booking date. The six months start on the issue date only.
- Assuming a year. Six months is the national rule, whatever an old forum post says.
- Ignoring the employer’s limit. An unexpired clearance can still be “too old” for a specific office.
- Expecting an extension. A renewal gives you a brand-new clearance with a new date. It doesn’t stretch the old one.
- Mixing up documents. Other clearances, such as the NBI’s, follow their own rules, so check each one separately.
